In keeping with its tradition of being a leader in technology and e-commerce, the E-commerce giant is at the forefront of moving toward sustainability. Announcing their efforts to take their decarbonization efforts to the seas.
The undertaking is being led by their Global Mile team and is part of a recently formed collaboration with the shipping and logistics giant Maersk to transport Amazon goods on the world's first methanol-enabled feeder vessel.
The ship which is powered by a methanol-fuel engine, was commissioned on September 14, 2023, and named the Laura Maersk. The ship's name is in honor of Captain Peter Maersk Mollers very first steamship which at the time in 1886 was named Laura after his friend's daughter.
At the time, the steam-powered Laura was a revolutionary product of the Second Industrial Revolution and had a major impact on the shipping industry in the late 1800’s
The maiden voyage of the Laura Maersk is taking Amazon shipping containers from Shanghai to Rotterdam.
The head of Amazon’s Ocean Shipping Decarbonization team, Laura Bowen Wegener, states, “This is so exciting because it shows the world that cleaner shipping is possible.
It proves that there are companies such as Amazon who are willing to put the earth first by moving their cargo on Zero-Emission vessels that emit 95% fewer emissions than traditional ships.
Wegener states “Innovation wins, communities thrive, and we progress toward a cleaner planet.
Amazon has just finalized a contract with Maersk for the remainder of 2023 and 2024 for the transport of 20,000 40’ containers through Maersk’s “Eco Delivery” program.
Amazon is also a co-founder of the “Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) along with the Aspen Institute, Patagonia, and Tchibo allowing companies to access zero-emission shipping in order to speed up decarbonization in the maritime shipping industry.
Amazon has set a goal of reaching net zero emissions by2040. The Amazon Climate Pledge. Amazon's initiative to go Net Zero by 2040 is 10 years ahead of the timeline set forth by the Paris Climate Agreement.
Amazon is currently on a path of powering its operations with 100% renewable energy as soon as 2025.
